Safety is a top priority!
Our OJRD coaches start by covering basic skating skills; form, stops, starts, and safe falls. Skaters then start learning to skate in partnerships and packs and eventually work their way up to light contact (positional blocking, lean-outs, hitting form). At the end of the session all skaters will participate in a non-contact scrimmage. Skaters will be grouped by skill level and then age, where appropriate. The Junior Roller Derby Skills Assessment will be used as a guideline of progress.
Children and teens play a modified and low-contact version of modern flat-track roller derby. This is a safe version of the gameplay using the regulations established by the the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA).

Where can I get equipment?
Neon Skates Ottawa (285 St. Patrick St, Ottawa) offers a Junior Derby package. Helmets and pads can be purchased at most sporting good stores.
As a league, OJRD will work towards membership with the Junior Roller Derby Association http://www.juniorrollerderby.org/index.html
OJRD’s goal is to nurture bold self-confidence in children and teens by helping them to develop teamwork and athletics. We hope to empower young adults through roller derby and develop a version of the sport suitable for all ages.
